The Process
The technique I use is called thread painting, or free-motion machine embroidery. The thread becomes the paint and the silk fabric becomes the canvas. I also use silk paints. In order to achieve the textured effect, I use a basic sewing machine.
There are two stitches involved in thread painting and they are straight and zig-zag stitches. I manoeuvre fabric with the aid of a hoop under the needle. This allows me to create the marks on the fabric and build up texture.
To create depth, texture, movement and dimension to the work I use numerous thread colours of all shades and brands and by continually changing the colours of the thread I achieve the effect of depth and perspective.
Nature is my main inspiration, while working from photographs allows me to capture nature and recreate it through stitch.
